The Archaeological Museum of Sitia was created after 50 years of arduous efforts by the institutions and people of the city, in order to house and protect the important archeological finds from the entire province of Sitia, a large part of which was to be transferred to the Museums of Ayios Nikolaos and Heraklion.

The Museum was inaugurated in 1984. There are thoughts for its expansion following the implementation of the city's expansion plan.
