New Acropolis Accessibility
The Acropolis of Athens, a natural fortress of rocky outcrop, 160 m high, acquired a new special access (elevator) for people with mobility difficulties and disabilities in 2020. Access to the elevator is from a separate entrance, north of the Central Entrance (West slope) and via a 350 m long route ("Περίπατος"), which was designed - with specifications also for disabled persons in 2020.
The use of the elevator by visitors in wheelchairs is always accompanied by appropriately trained security staff. The elevator travels a distance of about 25 m and ends at the plateau of the Acropolis hill, in the area north of the Erechtheion.
The visitor then follows the specially designed routes of the archaeological site:
1. 1. A route west of the Erechtheion and the Ancient Temple of Athena towards the north side of the Parthenon. During the route, the visitor has a direct view, on his left, first of the northern projection of the Erechtheion, “the place of the sacred olive tree” and then of the architectural remains of the ancient temple of Athena. To the right, the visitor sees the pedestal of Athena Promachos and the eastern projection of the Propylaea
2. At the end of route 1, the visitor turns with his wheelchair either: a) to the left, following a route parallel to the northern colonnade of the Parthenon in an easterly direction (fig.3), or b) to the right, following a route to the Propylaea in a westerly direction. It should be noted that this route has a steep gradient of more than 6%.
3. At the end of route 2, the visitor heads southwards following the eastern aspect of the Parthenon. In addition to the Parthenon, there is a direct view to the left of the architectural remains of the Temple of Rome and Augustus. The route ends almost at the southern Kimoneion fortification wall and the western face of the old Acropolis Museum. There a second elevator has been installed to allow visitors to descend to the courtyard of the old museum (closed to the public since 2007) and to use the sanitary facilities.
Finally, visitors in wheelchairs are directed to the exit following the same routes.
You can see the route of the disabled visitors at: http://theheartofancientathens.gr/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/Efaath_Acropolis_accessibility.jpg
The elevator is also used for handicapped persons and for a parent accompanying two or more infants alone.
For the conditions of use, it is necessary to contact us by telephone before arrival at the venue (+30 210 3214172, +30 210 9238470). The service is not available during heavy weather or strong winds.
For further information, please contact the archives at 210 32 14 172 and 210 92 38 470
Elevator available for wheelchairs, people with diminished abilities, and any parent attending two or more infants on her/his own. The elevator is located at about 350 m. far from the main entrance of the archaeological site.
