The mausoleum of Gazi Evrenos is located at the site where the sacred cemetery of the descendants of the Ottoman conqueror and founder of the city of Giannitsa once stood. It was built above the tomb of Gazi Evrenos, while members of his family continued to be buried around it. Gradually, the place acquired the character of a pilgrimage site.

The original 15th?century structure was an imposing single?chamber building with a square floor plan and a lead?covered dome. Later, after the mid?17th century, the original core was expanded southwards, and in the early 20th century the building underwent a complete renovation that largely gave it its present form. With the addition of further spaces, it functioned not only as a mausoleum but also as a mosque.

Excavations inside the building revealed, at a lower level and adjacent to the western wall, a cist grave with surrounding walls decorated with aniconic wall paintings imitating marble revetment. Today, the marble inscribed slab from the tomb of Gazi Evrenos is exhibited inside the mausoleum, informing us of the exact date of his death: Wednesday, 17 November 1417.
