The fountain was a gift by Sultan Abdul Hamid to the people of Thessaloniki in 1889. On the day of its inauguration, cherry sorbet flowed from the fountain. It remained in the same position until 1936. The present-day fountain is a faithful reconstruction of the original and was placed in the same spot in 1977.
