The site is situated at the plain east of the modern village Hotousa and is surrounded by walls of late Classical or Hellenistic date. Around the area dated to the historic period, on the site "Agios Georgios" and "Kouroupa", there are remains of prehistoric settlement. In the plain of Hotousa-Kandela there are also remains of the earthen bank of Kaphyates and prehistoric catabothre.

The first excavations were undertaken by the director of the ephorate Dr. Th. Spyropoulos during the last decade. An ancient temple, dated to the 4th century B.C. was partly excavated. An early Christian Basilica (5th century A.D.) had been built above the temple.
