The ancient city of Syvritos lies on the hill of Kephala, at an altitude of 618 m., at the northwestern edge of the Amari valley. The earliest archaeological evidence dates back to the Late Bronze Age, since it is mentioned on Linear B tablets from Knossos as Su-ki-ri-ta, that is Syvrita. The city of the Protohistoric and Historical times is located on the hill, on the western foothills of Psiloritis. The acropolis was founded at the top of the hill, while the city extended lower, towards the south-west. The use of space on the hill continued without interruption through the Geometric period. Three sectors have been excavated so far: the northern and southern plateaus and a central section near the top, which joins the previous two. More than forty (40) depositional pits, carved into the natural rock, were uncovered in this central part. The deposits date from the 12th century BC to the 9th century BC. The contents of the pits included the disposals from communal food consumption while the manner in which the waste was deposited suggests ritual activity. The pottery from the deposits that has been studied dates the Late Bronze Age settlement to the Postpalatial and the Sub-Minoan periods.Parts of the city wall are preserved, in the area of the modern settlement of Thronos, dating back to the Hellenistic period. Parts of an epistyle, on which consular resolutions were engraved, date to the same period, proving the city's relations with the wider Hellenistic world.
