Excavations were conducted for the first time at the end of last century by the British Archaeological School at Athens. At that time they revealed the theatre , the Thersileion Bouleuterion and remains of the ancient Agora. In 1990 Profs. Lanter and Spyropoulos started new excavations at the ancient Agora. Special studies are already ready and restoration work is going to start at the area of the Ancient theatre.



The Ancient Theatre of Megalopolis is located south of the ancient Agora of Megalopolis and the Helisson River, which flows through the Great City (Megale Polis). North of the river, the civic buildings of the city have been identified (the Philippios Stoa -1-, the Myropolis Stoa -2-, the City Bouleuterion -3-, and the Sanctuary of Zeus Soter -4-). South of the river lies the theatre -5- together with the Thersilion -6-, the assembly hall of the Arcadian League. These were built according to a unified design, fulfilling the needs of an extensive building program.
