View of the second side of the votive discus
Discus of Poplius Asclepiades

This is the discus dedicated to the sanctuary of Olympia by the Olympic champion Poplius Asclepiades. There is an incised inscription on both sides of the discus, which is decorated with concentric circles. The first inscription states that the discus is an offering to Olympius Zeus by the Corinthian Poplius Asclepiades, winner of the pentathlon during the 255th Olympic Games (241 A.D.). The second inscription is the validation made by the officer who received the offering. This inscription reports that the offering was made during the 456th Olympic Games. The difference in the numbering is not due to a mistake, but because of the different way the date was calculated. That is, in the second instance the Games were numbered starting from 1580 B.C. and not the standard 776 B.C.

Inscription:   α).
