Head of Alexander the Great
Head from a portrait of the Macedonian King Alexander. It is a copy of a statue by the great sculptor Lysippos (4th century B.C.) who was granted the exclusive privilege of being the sole creator of Alexander's statues. The work depicts all the known personal features of the great warrior: the wavy hair, the intense look, the half-open mouth and the wrinkle on his forehead. Alexander's features are idealized, as it was usually the case with the portraits of the young King.
