Front view of the athlete's head
Athlete's head

This is the head of the statue of an athlete from the Classical period. The man turns slightly to the left and has a ribbon on his hair. Previously, the statue was had been attributed with Heracles at a young age. Currently, however, it is believed that it is the statue of an unknown athlete and, judging from his swollen ears, he was probably a wrestler or a pancration athlete, who dedicated his statue to the sanctuary of Olympia. The work appears to have been influenced by the style of Skopas and Lysippos, the two great artists who became the hallmark of fourth century B.C. art.
