Busts of griffins

Nine busts of griffins that were most likely decorative elements placed on the helmet of Athena's statue. The latter was worshiped at the village of Emborio in Chios. The griffins were most probably aligned in two groups, so that some of them faced right and some faced left surrounding a larger griffin that was positioned frontally. The mythical creatures are depicted with their crooked beaks open, so that their teeth and their curvy tongues are visible, and their eyes are protrusive and round. They bear an almost conical crest at the top of their head in front of their pointy ears, and have a sigmoid neck that concludes in a hook-like fixing ring.
