Menander, the poet, is depicted in protome
Menander's mosaic

The particular mosaic floor covered the symposium room (room for feasting, otherwise known as “andron”) of the so-called “House of Menander”, a richly decorated house of the 3rd century A.D. The mosaic depicts the bust of the poet Menander along with various scenes from his comedy plays, as well as the Muse of Comedy, Thaleia, with her symbols: a comic mask and a scepter. The comedy scenes are framed inside square compartments and arranged in a T-shape. They face towards the center of the room and are accompanied by inscriptions, which allow the identification of the figures and the works that are represented. The compartments at the back of the room are flanked by three rectangular frames with geometric decorations. These outline where the guests' beds were positioned.
