The Folklore Museum of Kymi was established in 1981 by the Cultural Association of Kymi. It is one of the finest regional museums of its kind in Greece. In addition, it also serves as the city’s museum.
The Museum is housed in a privately owned three-story neoclassical building, built in the late 19th century, located in a central area of the town. The building formerly belonged to the National Bank of Greece, which operated its local branch there for many years. In 1997, ownership of the building was transferred to the Association.
The Museum’s collection consists of approximately 1,800 objects from the period 1800 to 1930, a time when Kymi prospered financially, socially and culturally, due to the trade of the local red wine in the ports of the Black Sea and France. The collection was formed through donations from local residents, who supported — and continue to support — the establishment and operation of the Museum both morally and materially.
