The remains of the ancient Epitalio, significant city of Trifilia of the 5th century. B.C. survive south of the Alpheus, just before the river empties into the Ionian Sea.The name designates the coastal position that the city occupied in ancient times (on the shore) before the embankments, the geological changes and anthropogenic interventions carry the coastline some distance to the west.
