Permanent exhibition of Paul and Alexandra Canellopoulou Museum

Front view of the head
Head of Alexander the Great

The head of Alexander the Great at the Canellopoulos Museum is one of the most beautiful portraits of the young Macedonian King, and probably was once part of a statue. The entire head survives in a good condition, and is cracked horizontally at the base of the neck. The hair, formed with a chisel and a drill, consists of lavish curls surrounding the face and covering the back of the head all the way to the end of the neck. This is an idealized portrait of the king at a young age. Idealized portraits were common in the portaiture of the king.
