Permanent exhibition of Ancient Agora Museum

Marble stele with a law against tyranny

Marble stele crowned with a relief interpreted as a representation of Democracy crowning the seated Demos (people) of Athens. Below the relief is inscribed an anti-tyranny decree passed by the Assembly of the people of Athens (Ekklesia) in 337/6 BC., intended to discourage attempts to set up a tyranny, i.e. a dictatorship.
