Collection of Japanese art

Kyathos with a lacy rim

This is a very small Japanese kyathos with a lacy rim. It is quite impressive because of its shape as well as its decoration. The kyathos is made of white porcelain covered with glazing and bears decorative patterns of multicolored enamel. It is a remarkable example of the Arita or Imari style. Arita is the province in which, from the beginning of the 17th century, the Japanese discovered a natural mixture of clay and porcelain and, as a result, decided to establish a pottery workshop in the area. Imari, on the other hand, is the port from which the porcelain produced in Arita was exported to the West. During the period from 1750 until 1890, the potters of Arita made very delicate vessels. The particular vessels were famous for the quality of their porcelain and for the finesse of their decoration, which was characterized by the use of only a few colors. This kyathos is decorated on the inside with a blossomed tree, fences, flowers, and birds colored in green, red, yellow and blue enamel placed over the glazing. Also, inside the rim it bears a band of flowers made of multicolored enamel. The specific kyathos was part of the great collection of Gregorios Manos.
