Collection of Japanese art

Xylography with geisha representation
Oban tateyie print (oban sized print in portrait [tateye] orientation)

This is a characteristic example of the popular art of wood printing, which flourished during the Edo period. It is an impressive, oban sized work by Kitagawa Utamaro (1753-1806), one of Japan's best known print makers. It depicts a geisha in traditional dress, who sits comfortably smoking. Her opulent dark red kimono is decorated with flowers and her gestures are elegant and graceful. A fan and inscriptions complete the scene. Utamaro, known as the 'painter of beautiful women', emphasized the beauty of the many women he painted. This characteristic example of the so-called 'Portraits of the floating world' belongs to the Manos collection.
