Permanent exhibition of the Archaeological Museum of Delphi

Metopes of the Athenian Treasury

These metopes with figural sculpture in high relief from the Athenian Treasury comprise the only example of a complete series of metopes from the Archa?c period. The Delphi museum exhibits twenty-four out of the thirty, which decorated the treasury (nine along each of its long fa?ades and six along each of the short ones). They all illustrate mythological scenes: those of the secondary north and west fa?ades bear scenes of Hercules's labours, while those of the east and south fa?ades, which were visible from the Sacred Way, narrate the story of Theseus, the patron hero of Athens, and the war against the Amazons. The Athenian Treasury's pediments and acroteria were also richly decorated. These elegant figures with their graceful proportions, bold movement and detailed rendering of the muscles and pleats are typical of Attic art in the Archa?c period. The metopes were executed by five or six artists, who express two tendencies: one conservative and one progressive.
