This is a typical sarcophagus of the Clazomenian type with an elaborate painted decoration. The upper surface is covered with a variety of decorative motifs and figural representations. On the top, among bands of meanders and repetitive egg-and-dart patterns, is a scene of a fight between Pygmies and Cranes, while further down is a scene taken from the myth of Troilus. The following representations can be seen from the left to the right: First, Priam is depicted sitting on a throne followed by Troilus with his horses and his dog. Further on, there are two women and two men holding hydrias, and, finally, there is one woman filling her hydria at the fountain behind which lies Achilles. Next is a register with panthers, lions, dogs and bulls depicted among meander bands. The bands on the top inner corners portray a male figure wresting with a mythical monster, while there are helixes and palmettes on the metopes underneath these scenes. There is also a charioteer and a chariot surrounded by meander bands. The rim of the long sides of the sarcophagus is decorated with braids of small helixes and palmettes inside meander bands. An egg-and-dart pattern decorates the band of the lower inner corner. On the external rim there is an egg-and-dart pattern, whereas on the outside there is a meander and stars. The particular sarcophagus belongs to the Albertinum group.
