Permanent Exhibition of the Archaeological Museum of Abdera

Sarcophagus of clazomenian type (In. no.: 4500)
Clazomenian sarcophagus with representation of a hunting scene

This sarcophagus of the Clazomenian type was discovered at the cemetery of Abdera, and is a typical work of art of the Late Archaic period. The surface is covered with multicolored painted decorations, which unfortunately have not been entirely preserved. There is a continuous palmette design around the rim of the long sides, while the bands decorating the lower corners of the sarcophagus bear a schematized floral decoration. The legs are decorated with a hunting scene that illustrates a rabbit and dogs. This representation quite unique, both in terms of subject matter and technique.
