Marble Lion
Funerary lion

This lion is a typical example of Archaic sculpture, and was a funerary monument at the cemetery of ancient Strymi. The large animal is presented at a typical squatting position. It sits on its rear with its front legs upright and stretched and facing forward. The statue belongs to the north-ionic circle of Archaic sculpture, and it is most likely the work of a local workshop of Thasos.
