Clay sealing with representation of a prince
Sealing (impression in clay created by a seal) with the portrait of Ptolemy IV

An interesting sealing with the portrait in profile of the King of Egypt Ptolemy IV Philopator. The king, illustrated at a young age and with strong facial features. The sealing was found at the “House of Archives”, an aristocratic residence located in ancient Kallipolis. It was recovered along with other sealings created with seals of cities and public officials who used papyrus rolls for their correspondence. The particular sealing was most likely used to seal officially a papyrus roll sent by the king of Egypt to the Aetolian officers. It is perhaps related to the diplomatic activity of the Aetolians during the war between Ptolemy IV and Antiochus III in 219-218 B.C.
