Permanent Collection of the Archaeological Museum of Lamia

Detail of an attic red figured krater with Apollo - Artemis representation
Red-figure calyx krater

This red-figure calyx krater is one of the most important finds from the ancient settlement of Pelasgia. The style and composition of the painted scene favour its attribution to the workshop of the painter of the Niobides, which was active during the early Classical period. One side of the krater illustrates the Apollonian triad (the god Apollo, the goddess Artemis and their mother Leto) performing a libation, a common theme of this workshop. The other side depicts a rare theme: the theoxenia, a banquet of the gods in honour of a hero, here probably the Dioskouroi. This krater was restored in antiquity with metal clasps and remained in use over a long period because of its importance. It is a typical example of the Attic Red-Figure Style, and of this particular type of vase. It was found in fragments inside a rocky crevice near a ruined building, and was restored to its entirety.
