Sketch of the first metope of the temple's opisthodomus: Heracles kills the Nemean Lion
Metopes of Zeus temple

The metopes complete the opulent sculpted decoration of the Temple of Zeus, which centres round the spirit of competition and athleticism. Placed over the entrance of the pronaos and the opisthodomos, on the short sides of the temple, they depicted the Twelve Labours of Herakles, which were related to the founding of the Olympic games. The Nemean Lion, the Lernaean Hydra, the Stymphalian Birds, the Cretan Bull, the Kerynean Hind and the Girdle of the Amazon were depicted on the opisthodomos wall. The Erymanthian Boar, the Mares of Diomedes, the Cattle of Geryon, Atlas, Cerberus and the Cleansing of the Augean Stables were shown on the pronaos. This unique work of the Severe Style is attributed to the so-called 'creator of Olympia' and his workshop. Fragments of these metopes discovered during the 1829 excavations are on display in the Louvre.
