The permanent exhibition of the Numismatic Museum

Aureus of Septimius Severus with the emperor's portrait
Aureus of Septimius Severus

The aureus, Septimus Severus' gold coin, is one of the most characteristic Roman mints. The emperor's head, crowned by a laurel wreath, is depicted on the obverse, while the reverse displays the busts of members of the imperial family, namely Caracalla, Julia Domna and Geta. This coin is believed to have circulated on the occasion of the celebration of the tenth anniversary of Septimus Severus' reign in AD 201. It exemplifies the use of coins by Roman emperors for propaganda, and belongs to a particularly interesting iconographic type, which assembles all the members of the imperial family.
